Titans will be without DeMarco Murray and forced to lean on Derrick Henry vs. Chiefs

Posted on by

The Tennessee Titans will be missing a significant part of their offense Saturday with DeMarco Murray officially ruled out for a Wild Card matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Murray, 29, suffered a knee injury in a Week 16 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and missed the team’s season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the veteran still recovering, Tennessee has been forced to turn to Derrick Henry, a 2016 second-round pick who split carries with Murray prior to the injury.

When Kamara eventually got back on the field, he knew that he was not playing for the rest of the season, so he loafed through drills. Saban created a punishment system called The Box, specifically for Kamara, which was four cones set up on the sideline where he would be sent to do push-ups, sit-ups and body weight squats for the duration of practice. He was suspended for the team’s game against LSU in November and again for the Sugar Bowl in January. By that point, Kamara had already decided he was transferring.

“I started feeling like this isn’t it, this isn’t for me,” Kamara says. “I had to follow my gut. Follow my heart.”

It led to a three-and-out. That in turn led to a punishing, physically dominant eight-minute, 14-play field-goal drive, featuring a third down catch-and-run by Jay Ajayi for 32 yards.

The issue with that is New Orleans can commit extra defenders to that and can spy Newton while it trusts its Cameron Jordan-led pass rush and Marshon Lattimore-led coverage to keep Carolina from hitting on big plays in the passing game.

Because of the running game, Brees has enjoyed one of his best, most efficient and most consistent seasons of his career, right before he turns 39 on Jan. 15. Newton has been riding a roller-coaster in contrast and goes into the playoffs coming off his worst performance of the season.

Bell isn’t the only teammate hopeful about Brown’s return this postseason. Center Maurkice Pouncey told reporters Brown wanted to come back to practice last week, but the team had to hold him back.giants_131

ESPN reported the 40-year-old quarterback’s relationship with Guerrero created friction between Brady and coach Bill Belichick, part of a growing rift between Brady, Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft. Three takeaways from Seahawks’ win over Cowboys

Posted on by

Ezekiel Elliott couldn’t solve Dallas’ offensive issues — Elliott ran for 97 yards on 24 carries and was in on nearly every offensive play for the Cowboys, but Dallas still struggled to find the end zone. Dallas was held to four field goals (and missed two more attempts) against a beleaguered Seahawks defense that allowed 42 points and 244 rushing yards last week against the Rams.

While Elliott and Dak Prescott complemented each other well last year as rookies, the Cowboys quarterback has been in a sophomore slump. Prescott went 21 of 34 for 182 yards and two interceptions, including a pick-six by Justin Coleman early in the third quarter.

The Cowboys were 6 of 13 on third down and mustered 283 yards of total offense. It didn’t help that starting left tackle Tyron Smith was forced to leave early after testing his injured knee.

Russell Wilson can’t do everything by himself — Wilson has pretty much epitomized the definition of an MVP this season. While the Seahawks have endured a multitude of injuries, Wilson has somehow kept Seattle’s playoff hopes alive. Wilson accounted for nearly all of Seattle’s anemic 136 yards of offense on Sunday. He was sacked three times behind a makeshift offensive line, but was still able to make plays when his team needed it. Wilson ran for a team-high 29 yards and was 14 of 21 for 93 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

Marner had a solid second, highlighting an issue the Leafs have had at points throughout the year: slow starts.

Posted on by

“I didn’t think it went in at the time, I didn’t see it unless it would have hit the back of the net,” Killorn said of the sequence. “But I knew when the buzzer went, it was a goal.”

The Leafs’ best chance to score came in the second period when Mitch Marner had a breakaway. He cut across and forced Vasilevskiy to stretch across the net to make a pad save.

“He made a really good play and I think I got lucky a little bit,” Vasilevskiy said of Marner’s chance.

Harden was injured on a missed layup late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 148-142 double-overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

On Monday, the Rockets announced Harden was diagnosed with a grade 2 left hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Harden’s grade 2 strain also means there is a partial tear, and when he gets checked out again Jan. 15, the Rockets will have played six games.

“We will definitely have to adjust how we play, the man averages 30 points a game,” Houston point guard Chris Paul told reporters after Tuesday’s practice. “We will be OK, though. We have a great group. We have guys who have played a lot of minutes and now it means a little more.”

“There were very few times where we were caught on the wrong side of the puck,” Wheeler said. “We were trying not to let their top guys get top speed going, trying not to let them play with a lot of time and space.”

Los Angeles finished the season with a point differential of plus-60 at home, eighth best in the NFL. Last season, the Rams finished with a point differential of minus-86 at home, second worst in the league.

Atlanta finished the regular season with a 5-3 road record. In the five wins, the Falcons averaged 27.2 points. In the three losses, they averaged just 12.3 points.

The Rams have won five of their last six playoff games at home. This will be the first Rams home playoff game since L.A.’s 20-0 win over the Cowboys Jan. 4, 1986.

Barkley announced on Instagram that he had signed with Roc Nation Sports’ Kim Miale, who also represents NFL players like Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant.

“We think he’s the best player in this draft, and we’re thrilled he became part of our family,” Miale said.

Barkley told ESPN on Wednesday that it was a “really easy decision” to sign with Roc Nation, and he revealed that his family was invited to Jay-Z’s home in Los Angeles to talk about his business future.

“A lot of people came around my way, but they were focused on me and (Roc Nation Sports) did a a great job at selling my family on setting me up for life, bringing value outside of football,” Barkley said. “I felt like it was harder for other agencies to pitch that family feel when they were working with 30 or 40 guys.”

Ward was released three hours later just before noon after posting $2,500 bond.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Ward was initially arrested Oct. 25 prior to the team’s Week 8 loss to the Panthers. Although he was not home at the time, a woman allowed police to enter his apartment when they responded to an alarm and claimed the 99.9 grams of marijuana seen “in plain view” belonged to Ward.

The woman, identified in the report as Ciera Woody, later claimed the marijuana was hers and faces the same felony possession charge as Ward.

While being interviewed by police, Ward admitted he was aware of the marijuana inside the jars and said “he occasionally smoked out of.”

Los Angeles rookie WR Cooper Kupp had 62 receptions this season, the most by a rookie in Rams franchise history.

Atlanta QB Matt Ryan finished the regular season with 4,095 passing yards, his seventh consecutive season of more than 4,000 yards through the air. That’s tied for third-longest such streak in NFL history.

Three takeaways from Panthers’ win over Vikings

Posted on by

The Vikings will have to wait another week to clinch the NFC North.

The Panthers were efficient with 216 rushing yards on 36 carries thanks to a great day by the offensive line.

2. Injuries are catching up to the Vikings — Minnesota started four offensive linemen who were not opening-day starters. The Vikings then lost tackle Riley Reiff early in the second half. Cornerback Xavier Rhodes was at less than 100 percent and was in and out of Sunday’s game.

3. Cam Newton hasn’t lost his MVP form — When there was nothing there, Newton made something happen. He was a magician at times against Minnesota’s vaunted defense. Newton was 13 of 25 for 137 passing yards and ran for 70 yards, including a 62-yard jaunt to set up Stewart’s game-winning end zone dive with 1:47 remaining.

The Texans quarterback was hit by 49ers linebacker Elvis Dumervil on a third-down pass during the second quarter. Savage’s head bounced off the turf and his arms then appeared to seize before he was helped to his feet by an official. The team said after the 26-16 loss that Savage did not have a seizure.

The Texans punted and Savage was quickly evaluated for a concussion on the sideline. When the Texans got the ball back after the 49ers ran six plays, Savage was under center. He threw two incomplete passes as the Texans went three-and-out. Savage was then pulled for good and T.J. Yates took over at quarterback.

Yates led a touchdown drive as the Texans trailed 13-9 at halftime.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien said following the loss that Savage “was evaluated and cleared to return, then evaluated again and not cleared.” That explanation was still insufficient to some. canadiens_1257_1de0c652c6e8d3c4-140x140

Tarasenko scores in OT as short-handed Blues beat Sabres 3-2

Posted on by

“We respected them too much,” Sabres coach Phil Housley said. “That’s a good hockey team. That’s a very good hockey team, but until we got settled in and got back into the game, I thought our third period was really strong. We’ve just got to start the game that way.”

She gave me a puzzled look.

“You know, ‘For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost,’ then the rider was lost, then the message, and so on until the war was lost.”

Her face was still blank. Had she really never heard this common proverb about logistics in war? I shrugged and offered meekly, “My parents used to say it.”

“You and I had really different childhoods,” she replied.

Julio Jones had one touchdown in the first 11 weeks of the season (proof that football is flawed). He now has two in the first half against the Bucs.

Timberwolves: Reserve F Nemanja Bjelica missed his ninth straight game with a left mid-foot sprain. … Minnesota opened a five-game homestand. The Wolves are 13-5 at home this season, including 7-0 against Western Conference teams. … Wiggins came through with two big buckets late in the fourth quarter after his slow start. He finished with 10 points. He’s been held to single digits just one time this season.

OK, we have a first down! But it’s still not great for the Chiefs. It feels like every replay features the color commentator circling the open receiver that Smith didn’t see. Still, KC gets its first points of the day with a Harrison Butker field goal, and the Bills hustle to answer before the gun: Hauschka is good from 56 yards, and the Bills lead 13-3 at halftime.canadiens_927_8fdfbaf89f846240-168x168

Dragic scores 19 as Heat rout Grizzlies 107-82

Posted on by

Goran Dragic and the Miami Heat got into a groove in the second half.

Big time.

“I thought Karl got off to a great start (against the Mavericks), and I thought that was important to play inside and out, and Jimmy was terrific, as was Taj (Gibson). Their toughness has added so much to our team. I thought Jamal (Crawford) and (Gorgui Dieng) gave us great minutes off the bench.”

In a bang-bang flurry of cuts, RedZone shows three straight touchdowns: Mohammed Sanu hits Julio Jones for a 51-yard touchdown bomb from the Wildcat formation; the Dolphins scoop up an errant snap to score a defensive TD; and Cam Newton runs it in on a bootleg on 3rd and goal at the goal line.

I will now embed the best of those three plays.

Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki played his 65th regular-season game against Minnesota, the most for any player. Nowitzki scored 10 points in 25:22. It was the 1,421st game of his career, leaving him three behind Kevin Willis for sixth on the NBA’s all-time list. … Six players scored in double figures for Dallas. … Antonius Cleveland was the first player off the bench for the Mavericks and played a career-high 17:51. He helped hold Andrew Wiggins to 1-of-9 shooting early.

Robby Anderson makes a RIDICULOUS catch in double coverage for a touchdown. This marks his fifth straight game with a touchdown.

Vancouver was missing top-line forwards Bo Horvat (broken foot) and Sven Baertschi (fractured jaw), but players weren’t using that as an excuse.
